Dacrycarpus dacrydioides, commonly known as Kahikatea or the White Pine, is New Zealand's tallest, native coniferous tree. This majestic tree is endemic to lowland forests across the country and is particularly well-suited to frequently-flooded or poorly-drained, alluvial soils. Adult trees feature dull-green, overlapping scale leaves, while the juveniles sport needle-like leaves, often tinged with a bronze hue. Notably, the tree is a masting species; during mast years, a single tree can produce up to 135kg of fruit, making it an essential food source for native birds like the kererū, bellbird and waxeyes. Ideal for revegetation projects, particularly in wetter areas and riparian zones, Kahikatea is frost-tolerant and thrives in both swampy and drier conditions. Its buttressed roots provide stability in swampy areas, and it's an excellent choice for increasing biodiversity without requiring a wide variety of plant species. .
