Corokia Silver Ghost
Notify MeCorokia cotoneaster Silver Ghost is a dense, evergreen New Zealand native shrub prized for its fine, silvery-grey foliage and distinctive zigzag branching. Small yellow star-shaped flowers appear in spring, followed by red berries that attract birds. Its compact form and striking colour make it ideal for adding texture and contrast to the garden year-round.
Perfect for native, coastal, formal, and low-maintenance gardens, Corokia Silver Ghost is ideal for hedging, borders, or container planting. It thrives in full sun to part shade, prefers free-draining soil, and tolerates wind, drought, and coastal exposure once established. Space approximately 50 to 80 cm apart for hedging.
Forms a compact, upright shrub reaching around 1.5 to 2 metres high and 1 to 1.2 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune lightly to maintain shape and encourage dense, twiggy growth. For hedging or topiary, clip as needed in late summer or early autumn. Remove any dead or damaged branches to keep the plant tidy.
Fertilising: Apply a slow-release general-purpose fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, supplement with a balanced liquid feed every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant but will benefit from deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Ensure well-draining soil to avoid root issues.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally monitor for scale or aphids. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Very low risk of disease. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot and allow adequate airflow to reduce the risk of fungal problems. Prune out any dead or unhealthy growth if it appears.
