Corokia Bronze King
Corokia Bronze King is a hardy, evergreen New Zealand native shrub admired for its fine, wiry branches and small, bronze-toned leaves that develop a rich coppery hue in cooler weather. In spring, it produces small yellow star-shaped flowers that contrast beautifully with the dark foliage, followed by small red berries that attract birds.
Perfect for native, coastal, and contemporary gardens, Corokia Bronze King is ideal for hedging, borders, or structural planting. It thrives in full sun to part shade with free-draining soil and tolerates wind, coastal exposure, and dry conditions once established. Space approximately 50 to 80 cm apart for hedging or group planting.
Forms a dense, upright shrub reaching around 1.5 to 2 metres high and 1 to 1.2 metres wide.
Trimming: Lightly trim in late summer or early autumn to maintain shape and encourage a dense, tidy form. Remove any dead, damaged or straggly growth as needed. For hedging, clip regularly to keep a compact habit.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, supplement with a liquid feed every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season to support healthy growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and prefers free-draining soil. Water occasionally during extended dry periods.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally check for aphids or scale, particularly on new growth. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Disease Management: Very low risk of disease. Ensure good drainage to prevent root issues and maintain airflow around the plant to reduce the chance of fungal problems. Prune out any diseased or discoloured growth promptly.
