Coprosma Marble Queen

Coprosma 'Marble Queen' is an eye-catching evergreen shrub prized for its glossy, cream and green marbled foliage. The small, leathery leaves have an attractive variegation that adds year-round brightness and contrast to garden borders, containers, or low hedging. With a naturally compact, bushy habit reaching around 1-1.5 metres high and 1-1.2 metres wide, it suits coastal, contemporary, and low-maintenance garden styles.

Plant in full sun to light shade with free-draining soil. Space plants 80-100 cm apart for hedging or grouped plantings. Tolerates wind, salt spray, and light frost once established, making it ideal for coastal gardens. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain a dense, tidy form. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in the first year. A tough, easy-care shrub that brings structure and year-round foliage interest to a variety of garden settings.

Trimming: Lightly trim in late winter or early spring to maintain a compact shape and encourage bushy growth. This cultivar responds well to light pruning but avoid cutting into older wood, as regrowth can be slow.

Deadheading: Not applicable, as this plant is grown for its striking variegated foliage rather than its flowers.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils or container settings, a second light feed in mid-summer can help support vibrant foliage and healthy growth.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Coprosma ‘Marble Queen’ is moderately drought-tolerant but performs best with occasional deep watering during dry periods. Ensure free-draining soil to prevent root issues.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though scale insects or mealybugs may appear, particularly in humid conditions. Treat infestations early with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Disease Management: Provide good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal issues. Ensure well-drained soil to reduce the risk of root rot. Remove any damaged or discoloured foliage promptly to maintain plant health.
