Coprosma kirkii, commonly known as Kirk's coprosma, is a low-growing, spreading evergreen shrub native to New Zealand. It features small, rounded, glossy green leaves and a prostrate growth habit, making it an excellent ground cover. This plant is particularly noted for its resilience and adaptability.
Ideal for use as a ground cover, in rockeries, or as part of a coastal planting scheme where it can tolerate salt spray and wind. Its dense, mat-forming habit makes it effective for suppressing weeds and stabilising soil on slopes or banks. It has a subtle appearance that allows it to blend well in naturalistic landscapes and modern garden designs.
Coprosma kirkii prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It is a low-maintenance plant and drought-tolerant once established and can cope with a range of soil types, including sandy and rocky substrates.
Grows approx. 30-50cm high and 2m wide. For planting, a spacing of about 50-60 cm apart is recommended to allow for spread and coverage. This spacing helps the plants to form a continuous mat, providing an unbroken green carpet over the area.
