Coprosma brunnea
Coprosma brunnea is a compact, evergreen shrub native to New Zealand, valued for its fine, twiggy structure and small, narrow brownish-green leaves. Its dense, bushy habit and subtle colouring make it ideal for adding texture and contrast in native, coastal, or low-maintenance garden settings. Typically reaching around 1-1.5 metres high and wide, it offers year-round interest and tolerates trimming well, making it suitable for informal hedging or structural planting.
Thrives in full sun to partial shade with free-draining soil. Tolerant of wind, salt, and dry conditions once established. Space plants 60-80 cm apart for hedging or 1 metre apart in mixed plantings. Prune lightly to shape or contain as needed.
Trimming: Lightly trim in late winter or early spring to maintain a tidy, compact form. Prune out any dead, damaged, or leggy growth as needed throughout the year.
Deadheading: Not required, as this plant is grown for its foliage rather than flowers.
Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to support healthy growth and colour. A second light feed in mid-summer can be beneficial in poor soils.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Coprosma brunnea is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry spells.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, but mealybugs and scale insects may occasionally appear. Treat infestations with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap.
Disease Management: Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues. Avoid waterlogging, as root rot may develop in poorly drained soil. Remove any discoloured or dying foliage to maintain plant health.
