Clianthus Scarlet

Clianthus puniceus Scarlet, commonly known as Kaka Beak or Parrot’s Beak, is a striking evergreen shrub native to New Zealand. This plant is highly valued for its vibrant scarlet flowers that resemble a parrot's beak, creating a stunning display from late winter through to early summer. The flowers are pendulous and grouped in clusters, making them highly attractive to pollinators such as birds and bees. Its lush, pinnate leaves provide a beautiful green backdrop to the vivid flowers.

Perfect for mixed borders, cottage gardens, and as a specimen plant, Clianthus puniceus Scarlet thrives in full sun to partial shade. It prefers well-drained, fertile soil with consistent moisture but can tolerate short periods of drought once established. This shrub benefits from a sheltered position, protected from strong winds and frost, to preserve its delicate flowers and foliage. Space plants approximately 1.5 to 2 metres apart to allow for adequate air circulation and room for growth.

When fully grown, Clianthus puniceus Scarlet reaches a height of 2 to 3 metres with a similar spread. Its arching branches and striking red flowers add dramatic flair and vibrant colour to garden landscapes. This native New Zealand plant not only enhances the garden's aesthetic appeal but also supports local wildlife, making it a valuable addition to any garden setting.

Trimming: Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches throughout the year to keep the plant healthy.

Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to promote additional flowering and maintain a tidy appearance.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and flowering. Avoid over-fertilising, which can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase and in dry periods. Ensure the soil is well-drained, as Clianthus puniceus does not tolerate waterlogging.

Pest Control: Watch for aphids and caterpillars. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Handpick caterpillars if they become problematic.

Disease Management: Be vigilant for signs of fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and root rot. Ensure good air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and apply appropriate fungicides if necessary. Remove and dispose of any infected plant material promptly.
