Carpodetus serratus, commonly known as Putaputawētā or Marble Leaf, is an attractive evergreen tree native to New Zealand. This tree is valued for its unique marbled foliage and small, white, star-shaped flowers that bloom in spring and early summer. The dark green leaves are mottled with creamy white, creating a striking visual effect. The flowers are followed by small, black fruits that attract birds, adding ecological value to the garden.

Putaputawētā thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. It is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy and loamy soils, and can tolerate both wet and dry conditions once established. This hardy tree is relatively low maintenance, requiring regular watering during the establishment phase and occasional pruning to maintain its shape and encourage dense growth. Space plants about 2-3 metres apart to allow for proper air circulation and growth.

At maturity, Carpodetus serratus can reach a height of 5-10 metres and a spread of about 3-5 metres, forming a tall, slender tree. Its distinctive foliage and attractive flowers make it an excellent choice for use as a specimen tree, in mixed borders, or as part of a native garden.
