Carmichelia grandiflora

Carmichaelia grandiflora is a distinctive New Zealand native shrub known for its unusual, flattened, leafless green stems and striking mauve to purple pea-like flowers that appear in spring and early summer. The flowers are often accented with white or pink tones and are borne in clusters along the stems, offering strong visual interest and attracting native pollinators. With an upright, open habit reaching 2-3 metres high and 1.5-2 metres wide, it suits native, dry, and low-maintenance garden styles.

Plant in full sun with well-draining soil, including sandy or rocky types. Very tolerant of dry conditions and coastal exposure once established. Space plants 1.5-2 metres apart for natural growth and airflow. Minimal maintenance required-light pruning after flowering will help maintain shape if desired. Avoid overwatering and rich soils. A hardy, architectural shrub that brings texture and native character to exposed or dry landscapes.

Trimming: Minimal pruning is required. Lightly trim after flowering to shape the plant and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing stems. Avoid heavy pruning into older wood, as regrowth may be slow.

Deadheading: Not necessary, but spent flowers can be removed to keep the plant tidy, particularly in ornamental settings.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring, especially in poor soils. Avoid overfeeding, as this New Zealand native is adapted to low-nutrient conditions.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Carmichaelia grandiflora is tolerant of dry conditions but performs best with occasional deep watering during prolonged drought. Ensure free-draining soil.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. No regular pest control is usually needed.

Disease Management: Very low susceptibility to disease. Avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot, and ensure good airflow if planted in more humid areas. Remove any damaged or yellowing foliage to maintain plant health.
