Carmichaelia stevensonii

Carmichaelia stevensonii, commonly known as the Weeping Broom, is a distinctive New Zealand native tree with a unique weeping form. It has long, slender, dark green leaves that elegantly hang from upright stems, creating a graceful, trailing effect. During the summer months, it becomes adorned with clusters of small, pink-white, pea-like flowers, adding a splash of colour. Growing to a mature height of 8m and spreading up to 5m wide, Carmichaelia stevensonii thrives in well-drained sites and is versatile enough to flourish in both full sun and partial shade environments.

Not only is this tree hardy to frost and capable of withstanding coastal conditions, but it also tolerates very dry environments, making it an excellent choice for a variety of landscapes. Its attractive banded trunk and large bunches of pink flowers make it a great native alternative to more traditional weeping trees, such as the weeping cherry. Found in the inland river valleys of the northern part of the South Island, particularly in south Marlborough, Carmichaelia stevensonii is considered an endemic species and is currently facing the threat of becoming nationally endangered.
