Brachyglottis rotundifolia is a hardy, evergreen shrub native to New Zealand, notable for its thick, leathery, round green leaves with silvery undersides. In late Spring to early Summer, it produces clusters of bright yellow daisy-like flowers that contrast beautifully against the foliage. Its tough, wind-resistant form makes it especially well-suited to exposed conditions.
Ideal for coastal gardens, native landscapes, and rugged border plantings, it complements dry-tolerant, informal, and low-maintenance garden styles.
Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Drought and wind hardy once established, and thrives in sandy or poor soils. Space plants 1–1.2m apart to accommodate its natural spread and airflow.
Mature size: Upright and bushy, reaching around 1.2–1.5m tall and wide.
Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a dense, tidy shape and encourage fresh growth. Remove any leggy, damaged, or inward-growing stems. For older plants, a moderate prune in early spring can help rejuvenate the shape, but avoid cutting back into bare wood with no active buds.
Deadheading: Not required, but spent flower heads can be removed after flowering to tidy the plant and direct energy back into growth.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In nutrient-poor soils, a second light feed in late summer can support ongoing health. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which may cause soft, leggy growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once mature, Brachyglottis rotundifolia is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry spells. Plant in free-draining soil to prevent root issues.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Slugs and snails may occasionally target young or tender growth—manage with traps or bait as needed.
Disease Management: Ensure well-drained soil to avoid root rot. Remove any dead or yellowing leaves to improve airflow and reduce the risk of fungal diseases. Avoid overhead watering, particularly in humid conditions.
