Brachyglottis Otari Cloud

Brachyglottis Otari Cloud is a compact, evergreen New Zealand cultivar admired for its soft, silvery foliage and bright yellow daisy-like flowers that appear from late Spring into Summer. The foliage has a velvety texture and a luminous quality that adds contrast and brightness to planting schemes year-round.

An excellent choice for coastal gardens, gravel plantings, or low-maintenance borders, it complements native, Mediterranean, and dry-tolerant garden styles.

Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Once established, it is drought and wind tolerant, thriving in poor or sandy conditions. Space plants 60–80cm apart to achieve a dense, mounding effect.

Mature size: Low and rounded, growing to approximately 60cm tall and 80cm wide.

Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a tidy, rounded form and encourage compact, bushy growth. Remove any leggy, damaged, or crossing stems. Older plants can be rejuvenated with a moderate prune in early spring, avoiding cuts into bare wood without buds.

Deadheading: Not essential, but trimming off spent flower heads after flowering improves the plant’s appearance and helps redirect energy into foliage growth.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a general-purpose, slow-release fertiliser. In poorer soils, a light second feed in mid to late summer may help sustain vigour. Avoid overfeeding, which can lead to overly lush, floppy growth.

Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, ‘Otari Cloud’ is relatively drought-tolerant, though it benefits from occasional deep watering in prolonged dry periods. Ensure well-drained soil to avoid waterlogging.

Pest Control: Typically pest-free, but check young plants for signs of slug or snail damage and manage with bait or traps as needed.

Disease Management: Prone to root rot in poorly drained soils—ensure good drainage and avoid overwatering. Maintain airflow through light pruning and remove any dead or diseased material to minimise fungal risk.
