Brachyglottis Sunshine

Brachyglottis Sunshine is a robust, evergreen shrub valued for its striking silver-grey foliage and vibrant yellow daisy-like flowers that appear from late Spring through Summer. Its compact, mounding habit and year-round foliage interest make it a versatile feature in a range of garden settings, particularly where contrast and drought tolerance are desired.

Well-suited to borders, banks, and coastal plantings, it complements Mediterranean, contemporary, and dry-tolerant garden styles.

Plant in full sun with well-draining soil. Once established, it is drought and wind tolerant, thriving in poor or sandy soils. Space plants 80cm–1m apart for coverage and airflow.

Mature size: Compact and rounded, typically growing to 80cm–1m tall and 1–1.2m wide.

Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a compact, rounded shape and encourage bushy growth. Remove any leggy, damaged, or wayward stems. Older plants can be rejuvenated in early spring with a moderate trim—avoid cutting back into bare wood with no active buds.

Deadheading: Remove spent flower heads once flowering is complete to tidy the plant and support continued vigour.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, a second light feed in mid to late summer may boost overall health. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, which can lead to soft, floppy growth.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment, then reduce frequency once established. ‘Sunshine’ is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry spells. Always plant in free-draining soil to avoid root issues.

Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Watch for slugs and snails on young growth, particularly in damp conditions. Use traps or bait if necessary.

Disease Management: Root rot can occur in poorly drained soils. Maintain good drainage and remove any dead or yellowing foliage to promote airflow and reduce fungal risk. Avoid overhead watering in humid weather.
