Brachyglottis Dunedin Hybrid

Brachyglottis Dunedin Hybrid is a hardy, evergreen shrub featuring soft, silvery-green foliage and bright golden-yellow daisy-like flowers that appear from late Spring through Summer. Its compact, bushy habit and contrasting foliage make it a standout in both coastal and inland gardens, offering year-round texture and seasonal colour.

Ideal for coastal plantings, borders, and low-maintenance landscapes, it suits Mediterranean, contemporary, and dry-tolerant garden styles.

Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Once established, it is tolerant of dry conditions and wind, making it well-suited to exposed sites. Space plants 80cm–1m apart for ground coverage and airflow.

Mature size: Compact and rounded, typically reaching 80cm–1m tall and wide.

Trimming: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain a compact, rounded form and encourage dense growth. Remove any leggy, damaged, or untidy stems. Older plants can be rejuvenated with a harder cutback in early spring, but avoid pruning into old wood with no visible buds.

Deadheading: Remove spent flower heads once flowering has finished to tidy the plant and direct energy back into foliage growth.

Fertilising: Apply a general-purpose, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth. In poor soils, a light top-up feed in mid-summer may help maintain vigour. Avoid over-fertilising, as it may lead to overly lush growth prone to flopping.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Brachyglottis is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Avoid waterlogging, especially in heavy soils.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though slugs or snails may occasionally nibble new growth. Use slug bait or traps if damage is noted.

Disease Management: Susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils—ensure free-draining conditions, especially in winter. Remove any yellowing or dead leaves to maintain airflow and reduce fungal risk. Avoid overhead watering where possible.
