Blechnum vulcanicum

Blechnum vulcanicum is a distinctive and rare fern native to New Zealand’s geothermal and subalpine regions. It forms small, tidy clumps of upright to arching fronds, with new growth emerging in rich bronze or red tones before maturing to deep green. Its compact, refined structure adds colour and texture to shaded spaces.

Well-suited to native, alpine, woodland, and specialist fern gardens, it thrives in sheltered, moist environments and adds subtle interest to rock gardens or shaded borders.

Prefers partial to full shade and moist, well-draining, humus-rich soil. Requires consistent moisture and protection from frost and drying winds. Space 30–40 cm apart for natural clumping.

Mature size reaches 30–40 cm tall with a compact spread of up to 40 cm.

Trimming: Minimal pruning is needed. Remove old, damaged, or dead fronds at the base to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage healthy new growth. Avoid cutting back healthy fronds, as they contribute to the plant's vigour.

Deadheading: Not applicable.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring if the plant is growing in poor soil. An annual mulch with organic matter, such as leaf litter or compost, helps replicate its natural habitat and supports robust growth.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods and while the plant is establishing. Blechnum vulcanicum thrives in damp, shaded environments and does not tolerate prolonged dryness. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and maintain cool root conditions.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free. However, young fronds may occasionally attract slugs or snails. Employ organic control methods, such as hand-picking or using natural deterrents, if damage becomes evident.

Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Ensure the planting site has good drainage to prevent root rot. Remove any yellowing or diseased fronds promptly to maintain plant health and reduce the risk of fungal issues.
