Blechnum novae-zelandiae

Blechnum novae-zelandiae, commonly known as the Kiokio, is an attractive and robust fern native to New Zealand. This evergreen fern features long, arching fronds that can reach up to 1.5 metres in length, displaying a vibrant green colour that adds lushness to any garden setting. The new fronds emerge as a striking pinkish-red before maturing to green, providing a dynamic visual appeal.

The Kiokio is ideal for use in shaded garden areas, underplanting beneath trees, or along the edges of water features and streams. Its hardy nature and ability to thrive in damp, shaded environments make it perfect for woodland and fern gardens. It also works well in container planting, adding texture and colour to patios and shaded balconies.

When planting, space the Kiokio fern approximately 1-1.5 metres apart to allow for its mature spread. This fern typically reaches a height of 1-1.5 metres with a similar spread.
