Asplenium Maori Princess

Asplenium Maori Princess is a bold New Zealand native fern prized for its glossy, deep green fronds that emerge in a tight rosette, gradually unfurling into a statuesque, vase-like shape. Its strong, leathery texture and rich colouring lend a dramatic touch to shaded spaces, while maintaining year-round interest.

An excellent choice for native planting schemes, modern courtyards, or shaded tropical-style gardens, this fern prefers dappled shade and consistently moist, well-drained soil. Protect from frost and wind to maintain frond quality. Allow 60–80cm spacing for optimal growth and airflow.

Reaches up to 1.2m tall and 1m wide at maturity, creating a bold, architectural presence.

Trimming: Gently remove old, yellowing, or damaged fronds at the base to keep the plant looking fresh and promote new growth. Do not over-prune, as ferns are sensitive to excessive cutting.

Deadheading: Not applicable – as a fern, it does not flower.

Fertilising: Feed with a diluted liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer to encourage healthy, rich green foliage. Avoid over-fertilising, which can scorch the fronds.

Watering: Maintain consistently moist soil, especially during dry spells or when grown indoors. Avoid waterlogging, but do not allow the soil to dry out completely. Prefers high humidity.

Pest Control: Rarely affected by pests, but occasionally may attract scale or mealybugs. Treat infestations early with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap.

Disease Management: Watch for signs of root rot in poorly drained soil. Ensure good drainage and avoid overhead watering to minimise the risk of fungal problems. Remove any diseased fronds immediately.
