Arthropodium candidum Dwarf is a compact New Zealand native perennial featuring soft, arching green foliage and delicate star-shaped white flowers with purple and yellow centres that appear from late spring into early summer. This smaller form is ideal for underplanting, edging, or adding texture to native and woodland gardens. Prefers partial shade and thrives in moist, well-drained soil. Space plants 30–40cm apart to allow for their graceful, clumping growth.
Mature Size: Forms a low mound reaching approximately 30cm high and 40cm wide.
Trimming: Remove spent flower stems and any damaged or dead foliage in late summer or early autumn to maintain a tidy appearance. A light tidy-up in early spring also helps encourage fresh growth.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing faded flower spikes can improve appearance and redirect energy back into the plant.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In nutrient-poor soils, an additional liquid feed during the growing season may boost performance.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, this plant is tolerant of dry conditions but performs best with occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally snails or slugs may target young foliage—use pet-safe slug bait or traps if needed.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Ensure good drainage and remove old or rotting foliage to prevent fungal issues, especially in damp, shaded areas.
