Arthropodium cirratum, commonly known as rengarenga lily, is a robust New Zealand native with broad, arching green leaves and airy sprays of starry white flowers with yellow stamens, appearing from late spring through summer. Both hardy and ornamental, it’s ideal for mass planting, underplanting trees, or adding texture to native and shaded garden areas. Best grown in partial to full shade with moist, well-drained soil. Space plants 50–60cm apart to accommodate their spreading habit.
Mature Size: Typically reaches 60–90cm high and 90cm wide, forming a lush, clumping groundcover.
Trimming: Cut back spent flower stems and remove dead or damaged leaves in late summer or autumn to keep the plant neat. A light tidy-up in early spring encourages fresh growth.
Deadheading: Not essential, but removing old flower stalks after flowering helps maintain a clean appearance.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, an additional liquid feed mid-season can enhance growth and flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it tolerates dry conditions but benefits from deep watering during prolonged dry spells, especially in exposed or full sun positions.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Snails and slugs may occasionally feed on young shoots—use pet-safe bait or manual removal where needed.
Disease Management: Very low disease risk. Ensure good airflow and avoid overcrowding to minimise the chance of fungal issues. Remove any rotting or yellowing foliage promptly.
