Anaphalioides bellidioides
Anaphalioides bellidioides, commonly known as everlasting daisy or mountain daisy, is a low-growing, herbaceous perennial native to New Zealand. It forms a tidy mat of small, silvery-grey leaves and produces clusters of delicate, white, daisy-like flowers with yellow centres during late spring and summer. The foliage and flowers have a dry, papery texture, giving the plant an almost alpine or ornamental quality. Growing to just 5-10 cm high and spreading 20-30 cm wide, it’s ideal for alpine, rock, or native garden styles.
Prefers full sun with free-draining, gritty or sandy soil. Tolerates wind and dry conditions once established. Space plants 20-25 cm apart for ground coverage. Requires little maintenance-remove spent flower stems to keep the plant looking tidy. Avoid overly wet or humid conditions, especially in winter. A resilient, low-growing option for adding fine texture and soft colour to exposed, sunny spots.
Trimming: Little trimming is needed. Remove any dead or damaged foliage in early spring to keep the plant neat. Light shaping can be done if it becomes untidy or leggy.
Deadheading: Not necessary, but removing spent flower heads can improve appearance and may prevent unwanted self-seeding.
Fertilising: Apply a light dose of balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring if growing in poor soils. Overfeeding is unnecessary and should be avoided.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Anaphalioides bellidioides is tolerant of dry conditions but benefits from occasional watering in prolonged dry periods. Ensure well-drained soil.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. No specific pest management is typically required.
Disease Management: Very low susceptibility to disease. To avoid fungal problems, ensure good airflow and avoid overwatering or poorly drained soil. Remove any discoloured or damaged foliage promptly.
