Alectryon excelsus Grandis
Notify MeAlectryon excelsus Grandis, commonly known as titoki, is a handsome, evergreen tree native to New Zealand, prized for its glossy dark green foliage and tidy, rounded form. In late spring to early summer, it produces small reddish flowers followed by striking seed capsules that split to reveal bright red flesh surrounding a shiny black seed.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with moist, free-draining soil. Tolerates wind and light frost once established, and performs well in coastal and urban environments. Low-maintenance and non-invasive root system makes it suitable for street planting or as a specimen tree. Space trees 4 to 6 metres apart for shelter or landscape use.
Grows to around 6 to 10 metres tall and 4 to 6 metres wide.
Trimming: Prune in late winter or early spring to shape and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Light formative pruning when young helps establish a strong framework.
Deadheading: Not required, as the flowers are small and inconspicuous. Fruit can be left to develop if desired.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring. In poor soils, a second light feed in late summer can support steady growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, this tree is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during extended dry periods, particularly in warmer climates.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant. Monitor occasionally for scale or aphids, especially on new growth. Treat with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if necessary.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Ensure good drainage to prevent root issues and remove any unhealthy or congested growth to improve airflow and overall plant health.
