Portulacaria afra, commonly known as Elephant Bush, Elephant Food or Dwarf Jade, is a South African native characterised by its thick, woody stems and succulent small, rounded leaves, not to be confused with a Jade plant. It is noted for its unique ability to absorb more carbon from the atmosphere than other plants.
Portulacaria care requires warm temperatures and bright light. After a dormant period in winter, the bush produces small pink flowers grouped in clusters at the ends of the branches. It's perfect for small gardens, patios, hanging baskets or as a houseplant.
When Elephant bush is grown in its native habitat it can grow to 6m tall where it is a favourite food of elephants but inside the home, it is more likely to grow to around 1m tall.
