Philodendron Royal Queen

Its upright, self-heading form makes it an excellent choice for adding bold colour and structure to indoor collections or sheltered outdoor settings.
Ideal for tropical, subtropical, and contemporary gardens, Philodendron Royal Queen suits large containers, shaded courtyards, or protected borders. It grows best in part shade with consistent moisture and rich, free-draining soil. Space approximately 80 to 100 cm apart when planting in garden beds.
Forms a well-rounded clump reaching around 1 to 1.2 metres high and 80 to 100 cm wide.
Trimming: Prune away any damaged, yellowing or older leaves at the base to encourage fresh growth and maintain its compact shape. Use clean, sharp tools to avoid damaging the thick stems.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as this is a foliage plant prized for its glossy, dark burgundy leaves rather than flowering.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4 to 6 weeks during spring and summer. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter when growth slows. Avoid over-fertilising, which can cause salt build-up and leaf burn.
Watering: Allow the top 2 to 3 cm of soil to dry out between waterings. Water less frequently in cooler months. Ensure excellent drainage, as this plant is sensitive to soggy roots.
Pest Control: Monitor for spider mites, mealybugs and scale. Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust and deter pests. Treat infestations with neem oil or a low-toxicity insecticidal spray.
Disease Management: Overwatering can lead to root rot. Signs include wilting despite moist soil and foul-smelling roots. Improve drainage, reduce watering frequency and remove affected roots if needed. Ensure good airflow around the plant to prevent fungal issues.
