Monstera adansonii {Monkey Mask}
Notify MeMonstera adansonii Monkey Mask is a fast-growing, trailing or climbing evergreen with distinctive oval-shaped holes in its deep green leaves. Its compact habit and unique foliage make it ideal for indoor pots, hanging baskets, or training on a support in sheltered outdoor spaces.
Plant in bright, indirect light with free-draining, moisture-retentive soil. Water when the top layer of soil feels dry and maintain moderate humidity. Protect from frost and cold draughts if grown outdoors. Space plants 40 to 60 centimetres apart when mass planted in sheltered gardens or patio spaces.
Reaches around 1 metre tall as a trailing or supported climber, and spreads up to 60 centimetres wide.
Trimming: Prune lightly to control size and encourage bushier growth. Remove leggy or damaged stems at the base. Trim back runners if growing as a trailing plant or to shape when trained to climb.
Deadheading: Not required, as flowering is rare in cultivation and the plant is mainly grown for its foliage.
Fertilising: Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every four to six weeks during spring and summer. Reduce feeding in cooler months when growth slows.
Watering: Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry. Maintain even moisture during active growth but avoid soggy soil. Reduce watering in winter.
Pest Control: Watch for fungus gnats, spider mites, and scale indoors. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil and ensure good airflow.
Disease Management: Overwatering can lead to root rot. Use a well-draining potting mix and allow excess water to drain freely. Remove any yellowing or spotted leaves to prevent the spread of fungal issues.
