Hypocyrta glabra - Goldfish Plant
Hypocyrta glabra, also known as the Goldfish Plant, is a charming and unique houseplant prized for its cascading habit and small, glossy green leaves. Its name comes from the striking orange, tubular flowers it produces, which resemble tiny goldfish swimming among its foliage. This playful and attractive plant is perfect for hanging baskets or high shelves, where its trailing vines can be displayed to their full effect.
This plant thrives in bright, indirect light but will also tolerate some direct morning sunlight. It prefers consistently moist but well-draining soil, and careful watering is essential—overwatering can lead to root issues, while under-watering may cause leaf drop. Regular feeding with a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season encourages flowering and healthy growth. Its whimsical appearance makes it a favourite for tropical and eclectic indoor décor styles, adding a touch of vibrant colour and lush greenery.
At maturity, Hypocyrta glabra can develop trailing stems that grow up to 60–90 cm long.
Trimming: Prune lightly to maintain a compact shape and encourage new growth. Remove any leggy or straggly stems in spring.
Deadheading: Not required, but remove spent flowers to keep the plant tidy.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in winter.
Watering: Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Avoid waterlogging, as the plant is sensitive to root rot. Reduce watering in winter.
Pest Control: Watch for mealybugs, spider mites, and aphids. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth or use insecticidal soap as needed.
Disease Management: Prevent fungal issues by avoiding overhead watering and ensuring good air circulation. Treat any signs of fungal leaf spots with a fungicide.
