Dracaena marginata Colorama
Notify MeDracaena marginata Colorama is a striking, slow-growing shrub with narrow, arching leaves striped in shades of pink, red, and green. Its upright, multi-stemmed form adds strong vertical interest, making it popular for modern gardens, containers, and indoor use in bright spaces.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with free-draining soil. Tolerates light frost and dry conditions once established. Water regularly during dry spells and protect from heavy frosts. Space plants 80 to 100 centimetres apart when used in outdoor groupings. Can be pruned to maintain shape or height.
Grows to around 2 to 3 metres tall and 1 metre wide over time.
Trimming: Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base to maintain a neat appearance. Prune leggy stems back to a leaf node to encourage branching and a fuller shape.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as this plant is primarily grown for its striking foliage rather than flowering.
Fertilising: Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every four to six weeks during spring and summer. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can cause leaf tip burn.
Watering: Water moderately, allowing the top few centimetres of soil to dry out between waterings. Water less frequently in cooler months. Ensure pots or soil are well drained to prevent root rot.
Pest Control: Watch for mealybugs, scale, and spider mites, especially in indoor settings. Wipe affected areas with a damp cloth or use insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Overwatering can lead to root rot and leaf spot. Ensure proper drainage and good airflow around the plant. Remove any affected leaves promptly and avoid letting water sit on the foliage.
