Colocasia esculenta Coffee Cups
Notify MeColocasia esculenta Coffee Cups is a striking clump-forming perennial with upright, dark green to bronze cup-shaped leaves held on tall, dark stems. The unique foliage collects rainwater, which then tips out as the "cups" fill, adding movement and interest to subtropical borders, water gardens, or large containers.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with rich, moist, free-draining soil. Thrives in consistently damp conditions and tolerates shallow water planting. Protect from frost and strong wind. Mulch well and fertilise during the growing season. Space plants 80 centimetres to 1 metre apart for best effect.
Grows to around 1.2 to 1.5 metres tall and 1 metre wide.
Trimming: Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base to maintain a tidy appearance. At season’s end, cut back all foliage after it dies down in cooler regions.
Deadheading: Not required, as this plant is primarily grown for its striking foliage rather than its flowers.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring. For vigorous growth, especially in containers or poor soils, feed with a liquid fertiliser every two to four weeks during the growing season.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during hot or dry periods. 'Coffee Cups' tolerates wet conditions and thrives in shallow water or damp soil. Do not allow the soil to dry out completely during active growth.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids, spider mites, and caterpillars, particularly on young leaves. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if infestations occur.
Disease Management: Ensure good airflow and avoid overcrowding to reduce the risk of fungal issues such as leaf spot. Use free-draining soil in containers to prevent root rot, and remove any affected foliage promptly.
