Aphelandra snowflake

Aphelandra squarrosa Snowflake is a striking tropical evergreen known for its bold, glossy green leaves marked with vivid white veining. This compact cultivar offers a more manageable size than the standard Zebra Plant, while still delivering strong visual appeal. Though primarily grown for its foliage, it may occasionally produce golden-yellow flower spikes in warm, humid conditions.

Ideal as a feature plant in tropical, indoor, or shaded courtyard gardens, and well-suited to containers or conservatories.

Prefers bright, indirect light or filtered sun, with consistently moist, well-drained soil. Protect from cold and drying air; best grown in sheltered, humid environments.

Mature size: Typically grows to 30–40 cm high and wide, forming a compact, eye-catching foliage plant.

Trimming: Lightly trim in early spring to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Pinch out growing tips if the plant becomes leggy. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves as needed.

Deadheading: Remove spent flower bracts to tidy the plant and potentially encourage a second flush of flowering.

Fertilising: Feed every 4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter when growth slows.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Water thoroughly when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry. Use lukewarm water and avoid letting the plant sit in excess water.

Pest Control: Watch for mealybugs, spider mites, and scale. Signs include webbing, sticky residue, or white cottony clusters. Treat early with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Disease Management: Prone to root rot if overwatered. Ensure well-draining soil and avoid waterlogged conditions. Leaf spots may occur in humid environments—improve air circulation and remove affected foliage. Use a fungicide if symptoms persist.
