Thymus x Citriodorus Aurea
Notify MeThymus × citriodorus Aurea is a low-growing, evergreen herb with golden-edged green leaves that release a pleasant lemon scent when brushed. Small pale pink to lavender flowers appear in late spring to early summer, attracting bees and other pollinators. Ideal for herb gardens, edging, rockeries, and containers.
Plant in full sun with free-draining soil. Drought-tolerant once established and thrives in poor soils. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a neat shape and prevent woodiness. Space plants 25 to 30 centimetres apart for groundcover or edging.
Grows to around 15 centimetres tall and spreads up to 30 centimetres wide.
Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering and as needed to maintain a compact, bushy shape. Avoid cutting into old woody stems, as regrowth may be limited.
Deadheading: Remove spent flower heads to keep the plant tidy and encourage fresh growth.
Fertilising: Generally not required in rich soils. In poorer soils, apply a light dose of balanced, low-nitrogen fertiliser in spring.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and prefers dry, well-drained soil. Avoid overwatering.
Pest Control: Rarely troubled by pests. Occasionally check for aphids and treat with insecticidal soap if necessary.
Disease Management: Ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot. Avoid humidity and waterlogging, and remove any dead or diseased foliage to maintain airflow and plant health.
