Thymus vulgaris

Thymus vulgaris, commonly known as common thyme, is a hardy, low-growing evergreen herb valued for its small, aromatic grey-green leaves and tiny pale pink to purple flowers that appear in late spring to early summer. Both ornamental and culinary, it brings fragrance, texture, and flavour to gardens and kitchens alike. Reaching around 20-30 cm high and spreading to 30-40 cm wide, it’s ideal for Mediterranean, cottage, and herb garden styles, as well as rockeries and container plantings.

Thrives in full sun with free-draining, sandy or gritty soil. Drought-tolerant once established and performs best in dry, open sites. Space plants 25-30 cm apart for ground cover or edging. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a compact shape and encourage fresh growth. Avoid overly rich or wet soils to prevent root rot.

Trimming: Lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact, bushy shape and prevent the plant from becoming woody. Harvest regularly during the growing season by snipping young shoots, but avoid cutting into old wood.

Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower heads can tidy the plant and may encourage light reflowering.

Fertilising: Thyme thrives in low-nutrient soils and usually doesn’t require feeding. In very poor soils, apply a light dose of balanced fertiliser or compost in early spring.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, thyme is highly drought-tolerant and prefers dry, well-drained soil. Avoid overwatering, especially in cool or humid weather.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free, but aphids and spider mites may occasionally appear. Use insecticidal soap if infestations develop.

Disease Management: Ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot. In humid conditions, watch for fungal diseases like powdery mildew-improve air circulation and remove any affected growth promptly. Avoid overhead watering.
