Mint - Basil
Notify MeMentha x piperita f. citrata Basil, commonly known as Basil Mint, is a vigorous, aromatic herb with glossy green leaves that release a unique basil-like scent with a hint of mint. Ideal for culinary use, it adds a fresh twist to salads, drinks, and desserts. Small lavender-pink flowers appear in summer, adding soft colour while attracting pollinators.
A great addition to herb, cottage, and container gardens, it also works well as a fragrant groundcover or edging plant in sunny or lightly shaded spots.
Thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil. Cut back regularly to maintain shape and prevent flowering if growing for culinary use. Space plants approximately 30 cm apart to allow for spreading.
Mature size: Grows 40–60 cm high and spreads up to 60 cm.
Trimming: Trim regularly throughout the growing season to encourage compact, bushy growth and prevent flowering. Cut stems just above a leaf node, and harvest frequently to maintain shape and vigour.
Deadheading: Remove flower spikes as they appear to keep the plant focused on leaf production and maintain flavour.
Fertilising: Mint generally thrives without much feeding, but a light application of balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during active growth will support lush foliage.
Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods and in pots. Avoid waterlogging, but don’t allow the soil to dry out completely.
Pest Control: Monitor for aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil if infestations occur. Slugs and snails may also feed on young shoots—use traps or barriers if needed.
Disease Management: Prone to rust and powdery mildew in humid or crowded conditions. Space plants well, water at the base, and remove any affected foliage promptly. Improve airflow and use a natural fungicide if required.
