Populus x candicans Balm of Gilead is a fast-growing deciduous tree best known for its large, heart-shaped leaves that emerge with a bronze tint before maturing to glossy green. In spring, the buds exude a sweet, balsamic fragrance, a feature that has earned it its common name. This hybrid poplar is valued for its aromatic qualities, rapid growth, and stately presence in larger landscapes.
Ideal for informal, woodland, or rural gardens, it also serves well as a shelterbelt or feature tree where space allows. Its vigorous growth and tolerance for wind and cold make it suitable for exposed sites.
Plant in full sun in moist, well-drained to damp soils. It performs best with regular moisture but can tolerate occasional dry periods once established. Allow generous spacing of at least 6–8 metres due to its size and spread.
Mature size: A tall, broad tree reaching up to 20 metres in height with a spread of 10–12 metres.
Trimming: Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain a strong structure. For specimens grown as shade or feature trees, occasional thinning improves airflow and reduces the risk of disease.
Deadheading: Not applicable, as this tree is not grown for ornamental flowering and does not require deadheading.
Fertilising: Apply a general-purpose slow-release fertiliser in early spring if growth appears weak or the tree is planted in poor soil. Mature trees typically do not need regular feeding.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase (first 2–3 years), especially during dry spells. Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.
Pest Control: Susceptible to aphids, leaf beetles, and caterpillars. Monitor foliage in spring and summer, and use insecticidal soap or horticultural oil if infestations occur.
Disease Management: Can be prone to leaf rust, canker, and leaf spot diseases. Watch for yellowing, spotted, or dropping leaves. Prune out infected branches, ensure good air circulation, and apply a fungicide if needed. Avoid overhead watering to help reduce fungal issues.
