Notify MeCynara scolymus Artichoke Globe is a striking perennial known for its deeply serrated silvery-green foliage and bold, architectural form. This variety produces large, rounded flower heads that are both ornamental and edible. Left to mature, the flower heads open into stunning purple thistle-like flowers, adding drama to garden borders from late Spring through Summer.
Ideal for edible gardens, Mediterranean-themed spaces, or as a focal point in mixed borders, this artichoke offers both visual interest and culinary use. It prefers a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil and benefits from regular watering during dry spells. Allow at least 1m spacing to accommodate its impressive spread.
Reaches up to 1.5m tall and 1m wide when mature, forming a bold, sculptural clump.
Trimming: Cut back spent foliage to ground level in late autumn after flowering has finished. Remove any dead or damaged leaves throughout the growing season to maintain a tidy appearance.
Deadheading: Remove old flower heads promptly to redirect energy into the plant and prevent self-seeding, unless left for ornamental purposes.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring and again in mid-summer to support vigorous growth and flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and in dry periods, especially during the growing season, as consistent moisture encourages large, healthy buds. Avoid waterlogging.
Pest Control: Watch for aphids and slugs, particularly on young growth. Use natural deterrents or insecticidal soap as needed.
Disease Management: Artichokes are relatively disease-resistant but can occasionally suffer from botrytis (grey mould) in damp conditions. Ensure good air circulation and remove any affected plant parts promptly.
