Taxus baccata Fastigiata Aureomarginata

Taxus baccata Fastigiata Aureomarginata (Golden Irish Yew) is a large, compact evergreen shrub known for its striking, golden-yellow to lime-green needle-like foliage. When young, it has a columnar habit, gradually becoming more broadly conical as it ages. The new growth tips are light yellow before maturing to green with yellow margins, giving the plant a creamy appearance. This slow-growing yew typically reaches 1.5 metres in height and 0.5 metres in width within 10 years, eventually growing up to 15-30 feet tall and 4-8 feet wide at full maturity.

This yew is ideal for adding year-round structure to gardens, making it an excellent choice for formal screening, feature planting, or group plantings. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and can tolerate a wide range of soil types as long as they are evenly moist and well-drained. While the plant can handle full shade, its light yellow tips are best protected from hot afternoon sun and winds to prevent burning. The stiffly erect branches also produce coral-red seed-bearing cones that contrast beautifully with the foliage, adding further visual interest throughout the year.

Taxus baccata Fastigiata Aureomarginata is low-maintenance and does not require regular pruning, although it can be trimmed and shaped as desired, making it suitable for hedges or even topiary. It is important to note that this plant is highly toxic, with the seeds, needles, and bark containing taxine alkaloids that are poisonous to humans, dogs, cats, and horses. Despite its toxicity, this yew is a popular choice for creating a strong vertical presence in the garden with its compact form and golden-yellow foliage that holds its colour well throughout the year.
