Syzygium Tom Thumb
Notify MeSyzygium australe Tom Thumb is a compact, evergreen shrub with dense, glossy green foliage and striking flushes of bronze to red new growth. Ideal for low hedging, borders, containers, or formal gardens, it offers year-round colour and structure with minimal maintenance.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with free-draining soil. Tolerates light frost and responds well to clipping. Water regularly until established, then only during extended dry periods. Prune lightly to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Space plants 40 to 60 centimetres apart for hedging or mass planting.
Grows to around 60 to 90 centimetres tall and 60 centimetres wide.
Trimming: Lightly trim throughout the year to maintain its compact, rounded shape. A harder prune in late winter or early spring encourages dense new growth and helps control size, especially when used as a low hedge or border.
Deadheading: Not required, as this variety is grown for its colourful foliage rather than flowers or fruit.
Fertilising: Apply a slow-release fertiliser in early spring. For improved foliage colour and growth, a second light application in mid to late summer can be beneficial.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is fairly drought-tolerant but benefits from deep watering during extended dry periods.
Pest Control: Monitor for psyllids, which can cause pitting or puckering of young leaves. Use oil-based sprays or insecticidal soap if infestation occurs. Aphids may also occasionally appear on soft new growth.
Disease Management: Generally disease-resistant. Ensure good drainage to avoid root rot and remove any discoloured or damaged foliage to keep the plant healthy.
