Tulbaghia Tricolour is a vibrant and hardy evergreen perennial admired for its striking variegated foliage and delicate flowers. Its narrow, strap-like leaves display an eye-catching mix of green and white adding year-round interest. In summer and autumn, clusters of lilac-pink flowers rise above the foliage, adding a delicate touch to the garden. As a member of the onion family, its leaves and flowers release a mild garlic scent when crushed, making it both ornamental and functional.
All parts of this plant are edible, making it a colourful and practical addition to vegetable gardens, herb beds, or mixed borders where it can help repel pests. Thriving in full sun to partial shade, it prefers well-drained soil and is highly drought-tolerant once established. Suitable for Mediterranean, cottage, and rock gardens, as well as pots and containers. Space plants 30–40cm apart to allow for their natural clumping habit. Reaches a mature height of approximately 30–40cm, offering year-round colour and texture.
Trimming: Remove spent flower stems after flowering to encourage continuous blooming and maintain a tidy appearance. Cut back any damaged or untidy foliage in late winter or early spring to promote fresh growth.
Deadheading: Regularly remove faded flowers to prolong the flowering period and keep the plant looking neat.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring to autumn) for optimal foliage colour and flower production. Avoid excessive feeding, as this may reduce flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase, then reduce frequency as the plant is highly drought-tolerant. In prolonged dry periods, occasional deep watering will keep it thriving. Ensure the soil remains well-drained to prevent root rot.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant due to its garlic scent, but may occasionally attract aphids. Rinse them off with a strong spray of water or use insecticidal soap if infestations persist.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by diseases, but overly damp conditions can lead to root rot or fungal issues. Ensure good drainage and avoid overhead watering to prevent problems.
