Phormium Yellow Wave
Phormium cookianum Yellow Wave is a striking flax variety with arching, sword-like leaves in bright yellow-green tones that bring movement, colour, and year-round structure to the garden. Its softer, more flowing habit sets it apart from more upright forms, making it an excellent choice for adding texture and contrast to planted spaces.
It suits coastal gardens, contemporary landscapes, native-inspired planting, and mixed borders where bold foliage is needed. Phormium cookianum Yellow Wave also works well as a feature plant, in mass planting, or in large containers, where its vibrant foliage can lighten and lift surrounding planting.
This plant grows best in full sun to part shade in well-drained soil, and once established it copes well with wind, coastal exposure, and short dry periods. It also performs well in soils with regular moisture. Space plants around 1m to 1.5m apart to allow their arching form to develop fully.
At maturity, it forms a graceful, fountain-like clump reaching around 1.2m high and 1.5m wide.
Trimming: Phormium cookianum Yellow Wave benefits from light tidying to keep its arching form looking fresh. Remove dead, damaged or weathered leaves by cutting them cleanly at the base, and take out old flower stalks once they have finished. Avoid cutting healthy leaves halfway along, as this can leave the plant looking untidy.
Deadheading: Deadheading is limited to removing spent flower stalks after flowering. Cut these back to the base to maintain a neat appearance and direct the plant’s energy into healthy foliage.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to support steady growth, particularly in poor soils or containers. Avoid excessive feeding, as this can encourage soft growth.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase so the root system develops well. Once established, Phormium cookianum Yellow Wave is relatively tolerant of dry conditions, but it will benefit from watering during extended dry periods, especially in very free-draining soil or pots.
Pest control: This plant is generally low maintenance, though slugs and snails may damage young leaves and mealybugs can sometimes shelter around the base. Inspect regularly and treat promptly with an appropriate control if needed.
Disease management: Poor drainage can lead to root rot, and damp, stagnant conditions may encourage fungal problems. Watch for yellowing leaves, wilting, or soft, rotting growth at the base. Improve drainage, remove affected material, and use a suitable fungicide if fungal disease persists.
