Phormium Duet
Phormium 'Duet' is a compact, evergreen New Zealand flax featuring narrow, upright leaves with creamy-white centres and green margins. Its tidy, clump-forming habit and striking variegated foliage provide year-round interest and a fresh, light contrast in the garden. Rarely flowering, it is primarily valued for its foliage. Growing to around 50 to 60 cm high and wide, it is ideal for borders, containers, and contemporary, coastal, or native garden styles.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with free-draining soil. Tolerates wind, light frost, and coastal exposure, as well as dry conditions once established. Space plants 40 to 50 cm apart for compact groupings or edging. Remove any damaged or older leaves at the base to maintain a neat appearance. A resilient, low-maintenance foliage plant that adds structure and subtle variegation to both formal and naturalistic planting schemes.
Trimming: Remove dead, damaged, or browning leaves at the base as needed to keep the plant looking tidy. In early spring, cut out any older or overcrowded leaves to allow fresh growth to emerge cleanly.
Deadheading: Not necessary, but spent flower stalks can be removed at the base once finished to maintain a neat appearance.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils or container plantings, a second light feed in mid-summer can support strong growth and vibrant foliage.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Phormium ‘Duet’ is drought-tolerant but will perform best with occasional deep watering during extended dry spells. Prefers well-drained soil and does not tolerate waterlogging.
Pest Control: Typically pest-free, though mealybugs and scale insects may appear in warm, sheltered locations. Treat early with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Ensure good drainage and avoid overly wet conditions to prevent root rot. Remove any damaged or diseased leaves promptly to keep the plant healthy and attractive. Clean pruning tools to prevent the spread of bacterial or fungal issues.
