Ophiopogon Short Black
Ophiopogon Short Black, commonly known as Black Mondo Grass, is an evergreen evergreen perennial prized for its deep, nearly black foliage. Its slender, arching leaves form dense clumps that create a striking contrast in the garden. In summer, delicate pale lilac to white flowers appear, followed by glossy black berries in autumn, adding seasonal interest.
Ideal as ground cover, along pathways, or in mixed borders, it suits modern, minimalist, and Japanese-style gardens, where its dramatic foliage enhances lighter plants and stone elements. Space plants 20–30cm apart to accommodate their spreading growth. Reaches a mature height of 15–20cm with a spread of 20–30cm.

Fertilising: Fertilise in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. Avoid excessive fertilisation, as this can lead to overly lush growth and reduced foliage colour intensity.
Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once established, Ophiopogon 'Short Black' is relatively drought-tolerant, but it will benefit from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
Pest Control: This plant is generally pest-resistant. However, watch for signs of aphids or slugs. Use an appropriate insecticidal soap for aphids and organic slug pellets or traps to manage slugs.
Disease Management: Ophiopogon 'Short Black' is not prone to serious diseases. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal issues, and avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of leaf spot. If leaf spot occurs, remove affected leaves and apply a fungicide if necessary.
