Ophiopogon nigrescens, commonly known as black mondo grass, is a striking, evergreen ground cover valued for its narrow, arching leaves in a deep, almost black-purple tone. In summer, it produces small, pale lilac to pink flowers tucked among the foliage, followed by glossy black berries in autumn. With a slow-spreading, clump-forming habit reaching around 15 to 20 cm high and 30 cm wide, it’s ideal for modern, woodland, Japanese, and shaded garden styles.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with free-draining soil. Best foliage colour develops in full sun, but it also performs well in part shade. Space plants 20 to 30 cm apart for ground coverage or edging. Low maintenance and drought-tolerant once established. Trim back old foliage in late winter if needed to refresh appearance. A dramatic, low-growing perennial that provides year-round contrast and texture in borders, underplantings, or containers.
Trimming: Minimal trimming is required. In late winter or early spring, remove any dead or damaged leaves to tidy the clump and make way for new growth.
Deadheading: Not necessary, but spent flower spikes can be removed after flowering to neaten the appearance. Small purple flowers are often followed by attractive black berries.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. In poor soils, a light top-up mid-season can help maintain healthy foliage and growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Ophiopogon ‘Nigrescens’ is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells. Prefers moist, well-drained soil and tolerates partial shade.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Occasionally, slugs may nibble young shoots - use organic deterrents if necessary.
Disease Management: Very low susceptibility to disease. Ensure soil is free-draining to avoid root rot, especially in heavy or compacted soils. Remove any yellowing or dead leaves to keep the plant healthy and attractive.
