Ophiopogon Hosoba Kukuryu is a striking, slow-growing evergreen ground cover prized for its fine, strap-like black foliage that adds bold contrast and texture year-round. Its dense, grass-like clumps are accented in summer by small, pale lavender flowers, followed by glossy dark berries. Growing to around 15-20 cm high and gradually spreading to 30 cm wide, it’s an excellent choice for modern, Japanese-inspired, or shaded courtyard gardens.
Thrives in partial to full shade with moist, well-draining soil. Tolerates dry periods once established but benefits from regular watering in extended dry spells. Plant 20-30 cm apart for full ground coverage or spacing between stepping stones. Minimal maintenance required beyond occasional grooming of older foliage.
Trimming: Trim away any damaged or tatty foliage in late winter or early spring to refresh the plant and encourage new growth. Division every few years will help maintain vigour.
Deadheading: Not necessary, but you can remove spent flower spikes after flowering to tidy the plant.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring. In poor soils, a second light feed in mid-summer can support strong growth.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering in dry spells.
Pest Control: Generally pest-free, though snails and slugs may nibble on young shoots. Use organic deterrents if needed.
Disease Management: Rarely affected by disease. Ensure well-draining soil to prevent root rot, especially in wet or compacted areas. Remove any yellowing or rotting foliage promptly.
