Liriope muscari Okina

Liriope muscari Okina is a unique and eye-catching evergreen perennial prized for its striking foliage, which emerges pure white in spring before gradually maturing to green with subtle variegation. This seasonal transition provides bold contrast and interest in shaded areas. In late summer to early autumn, it produces short spikes of soft lilac-purple flowers, followed by small black berries. With a clump-forming habit reaching around 30-40 cm high and wide, it suits woodland, courtyard, and contemporary garden styles.

Best planted in partial to full shade with moist, well-draining soil. Space plants 30-40 cm apart to allow for natural spreading. Tolerant of dry shade once established, though it performs best with consistent moisture. Cut back old foliage in late winter to promote a fresh display each spring. Excellent for underplanting or adding contrast in low-light areas.

Trimming: Cut back all old foliage in late winter or very early spring before new growth begins. This refreshes the plant and enhances the display of its striking white spring foliage.

Deadheading: Not essential, but removing spent flower spikes after blooming can tidy the plant and prevent unwanted self-seeding.

Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support fresh growth and flowering. In nutrient-poor soils, a light top-up in mid-summer can boost overall vigour.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Liriope ‘Okina’ is tolerant of dry conditions but performs best with consistent moisture in free-draining soil.

Pest Control: Typically pest-free, though young foliage may occasionally attract slugs and snails. Use organic controls or traps as needed.

Disease Management: Avoid overly wet or compacted soils to prevent root rot. Ensure adequate spacing for good air circulation, and remove any discoloured or damaged foliage promptly to reduce the risk of fungal issues.
