Liriope Green Carpet

Liriope Green Carpet is a low-growing, evergreen ground cover valued for its dense, grass-like green foliage that forms a lush, tidy mat year-round. In late summer to early autumn, it produces small violet-purple flower spikes nestled among the leaves, followed by decorative black berries. With a compact, spreading habit reaching around 15-20 cm high and 30-40 cm wide, it’s ideal for underplanting, edging paths, or mass planting in shaded or semi-shaded areas, especially in woodland, contemporary, or low-maintenance garden styles.

Thrives in partial to full shade with moist, well-draining soil but is also tolerant of dry and tough conditions once established. Space plants 25-30 cm apart for even coverage. Mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Little maintenance is required-cut back old foliage in late winter to refresh the appearance before new growth emerges.

Trimming: Cut back old, tatty foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. This keeps the plant looking fresh and encourages healthy new leaves.

Deadheading: Not necessary, but removing spent flower spikes after flowering can improve appearance.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to promote lush foliage and strong flowering. In poor soils, a light top-up in mid-summer can support continued vigour.

Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Liriope ‘Green Carpet’ is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Prefers moist, well-drained soil.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Slugs and snails may occasionally feed on young shoots-use organic controls if needed.

Disease Management: Avoid overcrowding and ensure good drainage to prevent fungal issues like leaf spot or root rot. Remove any discoloured or damaged foliage promptly to maintain plant health.
