Liriope Amethyst
Liriope muscari Amethyst is a hardy, grass-like perennial with rich, strappy green foliage and vibrant purple flower spikes that rise above the clump in late summer to autumn. Its bold colour and tidy form make it a versatile choice for year-round structure and seasonal interest.
Ideal for formal borders, rockeries with a cottage feel, or as a ground cover for erosion control, it thrives in full sun to shade and adapts well to a wide range of conditions. Once established, it tolerates drought, frost, and extended wet periods. Plant in free-draining soil, spacing 40 x 40 cm for groupings, and enrich with composted manure for best performance.
Trimming: Cut back old foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges to keep the clump tidy and encourage fresh leaves.
Fertilising: Apply a general-purpose slow-release fertiliser in spring. Incorporate compost or well-rotted manure annually to enrich the soil.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Once established, it tolerates dry spells, frost, and seasonal wetness, but ensure soil remains free-draining.
Pest Control: Rarely troubled by pests.
Disease Management: Low risk, but crown rot can occur in poorly drained or overly wet conditions. Improve drainage if needed and avoid overwatering.
