Libertia peregrinans

Libertia peregrinans is a remarkable native New Zealand grass with stiff, sword-like golden-green leaves that become an intense orange colour as they mature. In spring, it boasts clusters of small, white flowers that add to its visual appeal.

Libertia peregrinans is a hardy plant that can tolerate a range of conditions, including poor soil and drought, making it a versatile addition to your garden. It prefers full sun to light shade and achieves a height and spread of about 0.6m, providing a compact yet impactful presence. This low-maintenance perennial is perfect for borders, rockeries, or as a general garden filler, adding a unique, eye-catching element with its distinctive colouring and form. Plant a row in front of a dark fence for a stunning visual effect.

Trimming: Trim Libertia peregrinans by removing old, damaged, or browned leaves at the base to keep the clump tidy. Avoid cutting the whole plant back hard unless necessary, as this can spoil its natural upright form.

Deadheading: Cut spent flower stems back to the base once flowering has finished, unless seedheads are wanted for ornamental interest or naturalising.

Fertilising: Feed lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser, or apply compost around the base. Avoid heavy feeding, as this can encourage soft growth and reduce the plant’s naturally compact habit.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, Libertia peregrinans tolerates dry periods, but will benefit from deep watering during extreme dry spells, especially in exposed or free-draining sites.

Pest control: Watch for snails, slugs, and scale. Signs include chewed foliage, sticky residue, or sooty mould. Remove pests by hand where practical, and use suitable bait or horticultural oil if needed.

Disease management: Look out for leaf spot, crown rot, and root rot, particularly in wet or poorly drained conditions. Signs include brown or black spotting, yellowing foliage, soft growth at the crown, wilting, or poor vigour. Remove affected foliage, improve drainage and airflow, avoid overwatering, and use an appropriate fungicide if disease persists.
