Iris ensata Geisha Girl

Iris ensata Geisha Girl is a refined Japanese iris admired for its large, soft lavender-purple flowers marked with fine veining and a gentle yellow accent at the centre. Appearing in early to mid-summer, the elegant petals and tall, slender foliage bring a graceful vertical accent and a sense of calm to damp garden settings.

Ideal for Japanese, water, and cottage gardens, Iris Geisha Girl is perfect for planting beside ponds, in damp borders, or in containers kept consistently moist. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers rich, acidic, moisture-retentive soil. Space approximately 40 to 50 cm apart for grouped plantings.

Forms an upright clump of narrow, green foliage reaching around 70 to 90 cm high and 40 to 50 cm wide.

Trimming: Cut back spent flower stems at the base after flowering to maintain a tidy appearance and prevent unwanted self-seeding. In late autumn, trim yellowing or dead foliage to just above soil level to prepare for winter.

Deadheading: Recommended. Remove individual spent flowers during the flowering period to encourage continued flowering and keep the plant looking neat.

Fertilising: Apply a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in early spring. For best results, supplement with a low-nitrogen liquid fertiliser every 4 to 6 weeks throughout the growing season, especially in poor soils.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, particularly during active growth and flowering. Iris ensata prefers acidic, damp soil and can tolerate shallow water over the root zone during the growing season. Reduce watering as the plant enters dormancy in late autumn.

Pest Control: Typically pest-free. Monitor for slugs and snails, especially around young shoots. Use traps or bait if necessary.

Disease Management: Avoid waterlogging in winter to prevent rhizome rot. Provide good airflow and remove spent or diseased foliage to minimise the risk of fungal issues such as leaf spot.
