Iris ensata Fatima Go Aru

Iris ensata Fatima Go Aru is a refined Japanese iris admired for its large, pure white flowers highlighted by gentle yellow accents at the centre. Appearing in early to mid-summer, the broad petals create a serene, elegant display above tall, sword-like green foliage. Its crisp white colour adds freshness and light to shaded or waterside plantings.

Ideal for Japanese, water, and cottage gardens, Iris Fatima Go Aru is perfect for planting beside ponds, in damp borders, or in containers kept consistently moist. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers rich, acidic, moisture-retentive soil. Space approximately 40 to 50 cm apart for grouped planting.

Forms an upright clump of slender foliage reaching around 70 to 90 cm high and 40 to 50 cm wide.

Trimming: Remove spent flower stalks at the base after flowering to tidy the plant and prevent seed formation. In late autumn, cut back yellowing or dead foliage to just above soil level to prepare for winter dormancy.

Deadheading: Recommended. Remove individual spent flowers promptly during the flowering period to encourage further flowering and maintain a clean appearance.

Fertilising: Feed in early spring with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser. Supplement with a low-nitrogen liquid fertiliser every 4 to 6 weeks until flowering finishes, particularly in nutrient-poor soils.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during active growth and flowering. Iris ensata thrives in damp, acidic conditions and may even tolerate shallow water during the growing season. Reduce watering as the plant enters dormancy in late autumn.

Pest Control: Generally pest-free. Slugs and snails may occasionally feed on new shoots or foliage. Use traps or bait if needed.

Disease Management: Ensure good drainage during winter to prevent rhizome rot. Avoid overhead watering and allow good air circulation to reduce the risk of fungal issues such as leaf spot. Remove and dispose of any affected foliage promptly.
