Hemerocallis Chicago Apache
Notify MeHemerocallis Chicago Apache is a hardy, clump-forming perennial known for its vibrant, velvety red flowers with slightly ruffled edges, appearing from mid-summer to early autumn. Each flower lasts a day, but the plant produces many buds over the season, making it ideal for cottage gardens, perennial borders, and mass planting.
Plant in full sun to partial shade with free-draining soil. Tolerates drought and light frost once established. Remove spent flower stems to encourage continued flowering and divide clumps every few years to maintain vigour. Space plants 40 to 60 centimetres apart for best coverage.
Grows to around 60 to 70 centimetres tall and 50 centimetres wide.
Trimming: Remove spent flower stems down to the base after flowering to maintain appearance and redirect energy into the plant. Cut back foliage in late autumn or early winter once it begins to die down.
Deadheading: Remove individual spent flowers daily during the flowering period to encourage continued flowering and keep the plant tidy.
Fertilising: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring. For best results, supplement with a liquid feed every four to six weeks during active growth and flowering.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and through dry periods. While relatively drought-tolerant once established, consistent moisture supports better flowering.
Pest Control: Generally pest-resistant, though aphids and thrips may occasionally appear. Treat with insecticidal soap if needed.
Disease Management: Watch for signs of daylily rust or leaf streak (yellowing or streaked leaves). Remove affected foliage promptly and avoid overhead watering. Ensure good air circulation and use well-drained soil to prevent crown rot.
