Dianella nigra, also known as the Turutu or Black-anther Flax-lily, is a New Zealand native perennial. It displays green, strap-like leaves and during the spring and summer seasons, it produces small, purple-blue flowers with striking black anthers, which gives it its common name. Following the flowering period, attractive blue berries form, adding further interest. It's a hardy plant that tolerates various conditions but thrives best in well-drained soil and partial to full shade. With its typical mature height reaching around 0.5m, Dianella nigra is a great choice for ground cover, border plantings or mass plantings in woodland gardens. Berries are not suitable for human consumption but are popular with native birds.
