Carex flagellifera

Known as Glen Murray Tussock, Carex flagellifera is an attractive and versatile New Zealand native. This grass sports red to brown weeping foliage that truly shines in any setting. In late summer, light brown flower spikes emerge, reaching up to 1 metre, introducing an additional layer of interest to this easy-care plant. Suited to a range of situations, it flourishes best in free-draining soil but will also grow happily in the open, in containers, rock gardens, or nestled under existing plantings. This Carex variety is widely found from the coast to the mountains throughout New Zealand. Its older leaves offer an excellent refuge for skinks and bugs, making it a valuable addition to a wildlife garden. The mature plant maintains a compact form, growing to 0.5m in both height and width.
